County BOE Replaces Retirees From Within

June 25, 2013
By J.W. JOHNSON JR. - Marshall County Bureau Chief , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

The Marshall County school district has filled all of the major holes left in the county office by retirements, promoting from within to fill those administrative positions.

Over the course of the past few months, the district has sought to find replacements for several of the top positions in the district, including superintendent and assistant superintendent. The Marshall County Board of Education voted to promote Michael Hince, former principal at Washington Lands Elementary School, to the superintendent position and last month chose Corey Murphy, principal at John Marshall High School, as the district's new assistant superintendent.

Murphy's job description also includes acting as the district's personnel director, a position previously held by the retiring Robyn Fitzsimmons. Former Assistant Superintendent Wayne Simms also served as the district's curriculum and instruction director, a position that will now be filled by Woody Yoder, who most recently served as principal at Center McMechen Elementary School.

The board chose Tracey Lagos, guidance counselor at Moundville Middle School, as the district's new attendance director. Lagos will replace the retiring Marilyn Dague. Also retiring from the district is Joan Palmer, who served as the district's West Virginia Education Information System facilitator and computer applications trainer. She will be replaced by David Stoltesz, who previously served as assistant principal at John Marshall.

With those positions being filled by county employees, the board also needed to fill several principal positions. At John Marshall, Rick Jones was selected as the new principal after a stint as principal at Wheeling Middle School. In Washington Lands, Hince will be replaced by Michael Berner, who most recently served as assistant principal at John Marshall. The shuffling leaves Jones and Assistant Principal Jason Marling as the only two administrators at John Marshall. The two open assistant positions will be filled in the coming weeks, district officials said.

Elsewhere, Arica Holt was selected to replace Yoder as principal at Center McMechen. She previously served as a fourth grade teacher at Hilltop Elementary School. At Moundsville Middle School, Abby Aston was selected to replace the outgoing Lagos.
