Island Stabbing Suspect Is Arraigned

Police have one suspect in custody awaiting charges after he allegedly stabbed another man multiple times during an argument inside a home on Wheeling Island early Friday.

Bobby Shannon, 45, of Wheeling, was lodged in the Northern Regional Jail Friday, pending arraignment proceeding in front of Ohio County Magistrate Patty Murphy.

Murphy later arraigned Shannon on a single count of malicious wounding. He remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $50,000 cash bond late Friday.

According to police reports, a man on South Huron Street flagged down a police cruiser at about 12:30 a.m. Friday and alerted the officer to a fight inside a nearby apartment building. At least six officers and members of the Wheeling Fire Department responded to the scene.

According to Deputy Police Chief Martin Kimball, Shannon allegedly approached Derek Haught, 20, in the first floor hallway of the apartment building where they both live and demanded money Haught allegedly owed. Haught said he had no money and an argument ensued.

During the confrontation, Shannon allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Haught several times in the head and arm. A third man, who would later notify police, interceded and separated the two. Police said the witness punched Shannon several times to stop the attack and pry the knife from the assailant.

Police found Shannon lying on the floor of the hallway, apparently stunned from the witness' punches. Officers recovered the knife. They said there was blood throughout the hallway, as well as Haught's second-floor apartment, where he retreated following the attack.

Haught was transported by ambulance to Wheeling Hospital, where he had surgery to repair his injuries. He is expected to recover.

"Had it not been for our third party intervening, who knows what might have happened," said Kimball.
