Homer-Happy Moundsville Beats Weirton

July 2, 2013
By TRACY WATSON , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

MOUNDSVILLE - Due to heavy rains during the last five days, Moundsville Post 3 was forced to move a doubleheader Sunday and Monday's Area One matchup against Weirton Post 10 from Monarch Field at John Marshall to the 12th Street Field, which during the high school season is the home to Bishop Donahue.

While at first glance it may appear that Manager Bill Burkett's squad has been displaced, the smaller surroundings have actually brought out a little power and zip in the Post 3 bats.

After belting its first five home runs of the season on Sunday, Moundsville played a little long ball again Monday.

Moundsville’s Mitchel French dives safely into second base ahead of a tag by Weirton’s Heath Hildreth as he stretched a single into a double.

John Marshall graduate Shane Wellman fired a four-hitter, needing an efficient 92 pitches, and also launched a three-run bomb, one of three on the afternoon for Post 3, which rolled to a convincing 9-1 victory against Post 10 at the Moundsville ball yard.

"It a smaller field, but we have really hit the ball well the last couple of days," Burkett said. "The biggest thing coming out of this one is that it is an Area victory."

Things didn't start out quite the way Wellman, who fanned five and walked one, had planned, giving up a home run on the second pitch of the game to Trey Smith, but fortunately it managed to be the only run Weirton (5-5) pushed across in the contest.

Add to that fact that the one-run lead did not last very long with former Cameron High teammates Ryan Hughes and Mitchel French taking care of that. Hughes led off the home-half of the first with a base hit before French drilled a 1-2 offering deep over the right-center field fence for a 2-1 lead.

French scored the host's third run as well, reaching on a single and taking second on an error before coming home on Zach Winland's two-out run-scoring single in the third.

Moundsville really broke things open in the fourth, sending 10 batters to the plate and blasting a pair of home runs. The first two walks of the day, to Austin Pegg and Mark Walker, were followed by Wellman's three-run homer to right that pushed the count to 6-1. Hughes then singled and scored two batters later when Ryan Walton joined the parade and belted a shot over the left field fence to make it an 8-1 margin.

Wellman's fielder's choice in the fifth capped the scoring.

After Smith's lead-off homer in the first, Post 10 had only four more base runners the rest of the game, advancing one to second but never with more than two on in an inning.

"Shane did a very good job (Monday) on the mound and I think we have this thing going in the right direction now," Burkett added. "Things are really coming around, we are getting sound fielding, good pitching and hitting the ball, we will just have to see what happens down the line."

Weirton coach Bill Magnone was impressed with Wellman's performance, but not so much with his team.

"We were flat from the beginning and just didn't come to play," Magnone said. "But give Wellman credit, he kept everyone off balance and pitched a whale of a baseball game, we just could not get to him."
