Fred Simon

SIMON, Fred G. Jr., of Wheeling died July 2, 2013.

Fred was born August 22, 1926, in Wheeling, WV, the son of the late Fred G. Simon, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Davis Simon.

He was a graduate of Linsly Military Institute, West Virginia State College and the National Institute of Cleaning and Dyeing where he prepared for a career as a professional drycleaner continuing the 100-year family tradition through Cashmere Care Cleaners. Following the closing of the cleaners, he was a Special Education teacher at Wheeling Park High School until retirement.

He was a United States Navy veteran, proudly serving his country during World War II in the South Pacific and later in the Korean War.

Fred was an active life-long member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wheeling, where he served his Lord as President of Church Council, Trustee Chairman, Sunday School Superintendent and in many other capacities.

He participated in a life of service to his community as an active 20-year member of the City of Wheeling Planning Commission, president of the Island Community Association and president of the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan (1976-1979), receiving the Dapper Dan Man of the Year Award and the Robert S. McKelvey Award. He was also the recipient of the 1970 Distinguished West Virginian Award.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Ornold Simon; daughters, Janet (Albert) Jodoin of Palm Bay, FL; Beth (Jeffrey) Zimmerman of Fort Wayne, IN; Cynthia (Larry) Palmer of Chantilly, VA; sons, David (Jisook) Simon of Weirton, WV; Fred G. (Cheryl) Simon III; sister, Helen Samol, of Columbus, OH; niece, Patricia Poe, of Grove City, OH; nephews, Bruce VanDyne of Charlotte, NC; Lawrence Carlisle of Wheeling; grandchildren, David Baker, Jennifer Aubrey, Stacy Molnar, Anne Caruso, David Simon, Jr., Michael Simon, Matthew Kim, Emily, Mollie, Olivia, and Hannah Zimmerman; and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1409 Chapline St., Wheeling, WV, on Monday, July 13 from 10 until 11:30 a.m. Service will follow at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Deborah Gable officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1409 Chapline St., Wheeling, WV, 26003, or The Valley Hospice Foundation.
