Fifth-graders who bid farewell to Ritchie Elementary School Principal Rich McCardle in June will see a familiar face when they begin the 2013-14 school year at Wheeling Middle School.

McCardle was named the middle school's new principal during Monday's Ohio County Board of Education meeting in Elm Grove.

McCardle said his career with Ohio County Schools began 24 years ago at what was then called Wheeling Junior High School, now Wheeling Middle School. He later served as assistant principal at Wheeling Park High School from 2001 until his appointment at Ritchie in 2012.

"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to go to Ritchie Elementary," McCardle said to the board and county administrators. "I stand here sad, yet excited. I'm sad to be leaving Ritchie Elementary. It's an awesome, awesome school with awesome teachers and awesome kids and parents. The good thing is I'm moving one block down and two blocks over."

Having directed the career and technical program at Wheeling Park for seven years, McCardle said he plans to bring aspects of that training to Wheeling Middle.

Superintendent Dianna Vargo expressed confidence in McCardle's abilities as he starts his new position.

"Mr. McCardle has always been dedicated to the students of Ohio County Schools," Vargo said. "He's proven himself to be a fine principal at both Wheeling Park High School and Ritchie Elementary School, and I'm sure he will continue that success at Wheeling Middle School."

Meanwhile the board also approved hiring Leigh Anne Dayton as a general science and biology with multi-categorical special education teacher with autism at Wheeling Park for the 2013-14 school year.
