Kings Creek Spills from Banks; Some Weirton Roads Impassable

Weirton Community Center available as shelter

July 10, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WEIRTON - Heavy rainfall overnight and into this morning has caused Kings Creek near Weirton to rise from its banks in several locations.

Teresa Drive, Willow Street and Martina Drive are impassable at this time, according to Weirton Fire Chief Jerry Shumate. He said the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department has evacuated some residents of the Pleasant Valley Trailer Court on Kings Creek Road.

Outside city limits, Hancock County Emergency Management Director John Paul Jones said parts of Kings Creek Road and Lick Run Road are closed due to high water and debris.

The Thomas E. Millsop Community Center on Main Street in Weirton is open as an emergency shelter if needed.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning through 1:45 p.m. today for the southern half of Hancock County. And Jones said more rain is anticipated between 2-4 p.m.

Jones said people need to remain aware of their surroundings and avoid driving through high water. And don't wait too long to act when water starts to rise, Shumate added - call for help or leave the area as soon as possible, before flooding shuts off access for first responders.
