Daunte Green allegedly sped off after Bridgeport police attempted to stop his vehicle early Wednesday, starting a chase that crossed the Ohio River and ended in Wheeling shortly after Green intentionally crashed his vehicle into a police cruiser.
Bridgeport Police Chief Andy Klotz said officers attempted to stop Green's vehicle around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday in Kirkwood Heights after they watched him run a stop sign. Green sped away in the 2002 Ford Escort, running more stop signs and at one point driving on the wrong side of the road. Klotz said Green nearly struck other vehicles and slammed on his brakes in an attempt to get officers to collide with his car.
Green, 35, of Wheeling, eventually entered the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. Bridgeport police continued to chase the vehicle as it sped across the Fort Henry Bridge and exited the highway onto Main Street in downtown Wheeling.
Green continued onto Market Street, where Wheeling police officers joined the chase. At the intersection of Eighth and Market streets, just north of the Wheeling Tunnel, Green intentionally backed into a Bridgeport police cruiser, Klotz said. He resumed driving forward before jumping from the moving vehicle.
The unmanned car struck a building, while Green fled the scene on foot. A Bridgeport officer caught up with Green shortly after, and a physical struggle ensued between the two. Green allegedly was choking the officer as he attempted to arrest him, and the officer was forced to subdue him with a stun gun.
Wheeling police then took Green into custody, and he reportedly told them him last name was Ewing. He was transported to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries. None of the police officers were injured. The Bridgeport police cruiser sustained extensive damage when it was struck by Green's car, Klotz said.
Ohio County Magistrate Joe Roxby arraigned Green on charges of fleeing, assault on an officer and driving without a license. In addition to the traffic offenses, more charges are expected to be brought against Green in Belmont County. He was being held in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville on $500 bond.
