Statehood Celebration Moving, Educational

July 14, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Editor, News-Register:

West Virginia Day, June 20, 2013, will be remembered as one of my favorite days. From a learning experience to a moving one. The great folks at West Virginia Independence Hall and our elected officials outdid themselves. The Wildcat Regiment Brass Band performed at Independence Hall to a full house and played selections from the Civil War in a way unheard of in today's world. Readings from the state's founding fathers were artistically done in front of a large crowd outside on 16th street.

Later that evening a full range of talent at Heritage Port, from The Wheeling Symphony, The Joseph Sisters, Landau Murphy, and Kathy Mattea entertained thousands. State Senator Kessler in reading a writing from Lincoln with The Wheeling Symphony playing, was fantastic, as was a poem by Marc Harshman.

It must be noted that the local media coverage, especially from the reporters of the Wheeling newspapers in photographs, stories, and video, recorded the occasion in grand style.

Anyone who was unable to attend these events should not be disappointed. Stick around, the next one is only 50 years away.
