Rev. Joseph O’Reilly

O'REILLY, Rev. Joseph F., died on Monday, August 5, 2013, in Bluffton, S.C.

He was born December 8, 1932, in Crott Moyne, County Longford, Ireland, to the late Thomas and Catherine O'Reilly.

He was the fifth of eight children. He attended national school in County Kilkenny, St. Kieran's College in County Kilkenny and graduated from St. Mary's Apostolic School in County Longford.

Father O'Reilly completed his philosophy and theology courses at St. Peter's College in Wexford, Ireland. He was ordained to the priesthood June 3, 1956, in the college church at St. Peter's for the Diocese of Wheeling- Charleston.

Father O'Reilly served as associate pastor between 1956 and 1964 at St. Paul Parish in Weirton, St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Weirton, St. Patrick Parish in Weston and St. Agnes Parish in Charleston, all in West Virginia.

In 1964, Father O'Reilly was appointed pastor at St. Boniface Parish in Camden, W.Va., and its mission in Leading Creek, W.Va. He then served as pastor of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ravenswood, W.Va., where he built a rectory; St. Margaret Mary Parish in Parkersburg, W.Va.; and St. Charles Borromeo Parish in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., where he remained until retirement from active ministry in 2003.

Father O'Reilly was also director of Pastoral Care at Wheeling Hospital and was a member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.

Father O'Reilly was an enthusiastic golfer and it was his dream to retire to Bluffton, but in retirement he also assisted at St. Francis by the Sea and Holy Family parishes in Hilton Head, S.C., and St. Gregory the Great Parish in Bluffton.

Father O'Reilly was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Catherine (nee McKeon); brothers Rev. Michael O'Reilly of the Diocese of Wheeling- Charleston; Thomas O'Reilly of San Carlos, Calif.; Francis O'Reilly of Ireland; and sisters, Mary Ellen and husband, Jim Adler of San Francisco and Sister Anna Mary of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph in Palos Verdes, Calif.

He is survived by two brothers, John and wife Rose of San Bruno, Calif., and Peter and wife, Kitty of Port Jervis, N.Y.; sisters- in-law, Sarah of Ireland and Patsy of San Carlos; and many nieces and nephews.

A vigil service will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. August 11th at St. Gregory the Great, 333 Fording Island Road, Bluffton. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on August 12th at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great. Rev. Carl Bauer of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston will deliver the homily at the Mass and Very Rev. Donald X. Higgs, also of the diocese, will speak on behalf of Most Rev. Michael J. Bransfield, bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling- Charleston, and the diocese.

Burial will follow on August 13th at Resurrection Garden, Bluffton.
