IRONDALE -- Law enforcement officials were searching Thursday evening for 38 year old Michael Mitchell who was named a suspect in the shooting death of Maria Cantwell.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said Thursday Cantwell was found early Thursday morning by her children in her County road 50, Irondale home she had shared with Mitchell.
"The victim was shot at approximately 3 a.m. Thursday. Mr. Mitchell told the children he was leaving the house but would be back in a half an hour," Abdalla said.
Abdalla said Cantwell's body had been taken to Cleveland for an autopsy.
"I have talked to the prosecutor's office regarding a warrant for the arrest of Mitchell and we have issued a statement to all area law enforcement to be on the look out for the suspect. This woman had three young children," declared Abdalla.
The sheriff said he has talked to several people for information about Mitchell and planned to return to the victim's house Thursday night to search for more evidence.
"This is an active homicide investigation and we are pursuing several leads with the help of other law enforcement agencies," Abdalla stated.
