GLEN DALE - The 1996 John Marshall team that captured what to this day remains the school's lone West Virginia Class AAA football state championship, will forever be a part of history. That group will be celebrated 17 years later Saturday, Aug. 24, at St. Jude Park in Glen Dale, and officials are hoping the city and surrounding communities will come out and relive the glory.

It's all part of the second annual John Marshall Kickoff Classic, which is a steak fry event that will last from 6-11 p.m. Live music will be provided, and the cost is $25 a person.

Tickets are available at The Landing, Prodigy Sports and The Avenue, but can also be purchased at the door. However, last year's event sold out so it's recommended that tickets are bought in advance.

Organizers have worked tirelessly to get the word out, in part because former members of the team are spread out throughout the country. They ask if you know any of the football players and cheerleaders from the 1996 team, to make them aware they are invited to attend at no charge.

So far, some of the confirmed guests are Scott Pettit, Josh Lohri, Eric Tucker, Lance Phillips, Kevin Snyder, Chris Butler, Adam Finley, Casey Storm, Chad Markonich, Dave Allender, Gary Tucker, Josh Rine, Nick Kuca and Jake Sadaly. All told, about half of the team has responded.

Edison's Andreozzi Awarded

Carter Andreozzi, a 15-year-old junior at Edison, recently attended the Dermontti Dawson Steelers Football Camp and impressed those in attendance. Andreozzi walked away with a pair of awards, which were presented by Dawson.

Andreozzi took home the Outstanding Defensive Back award and also took home the Gridiron Elite Award, which assures his football profile will be submitted to 2,000-plus coaches ranging from various divisions in order to consider him for recruiting purposes.

Carter received instruction from various high school and college coaches, as well as some members of the Steelers. Kids from all over attended the camp, including Andreozzi's roommate, who hailed from Norway.

Former Hilltopper Feted

Nick Fuscardo, West Liberty College Class of 1968, has been honored by the American Baseball Coaches Association as the 2013 ABCA/Diamond Sports Company Pacific Association Division Coach of the Year. This honor comes after Fuscardo led the Fullerton College Hornet baseball team to the 2013 Orange Empire Conference Championship, Southern California Regional and So. Calif. Super-Regional Championships.

The Hornets played in the California State Championships and finished as the State runner-up. The former Hilltopper was also honored as the O.E.C., California Coach of the Year and Fullerton College Coach of the Year

He was also named to the El Camino College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
