City Council members will meet Sept. 3 to start telephone interviews with the five final candidates for the city manager job.
Third Ward Councilman Greg Metcalf said council met behind closed doors Wednesday to narrow the list of applicants from six to five people.
"We will start contacting the five final candidates to make sure they are still interested in the manager's job and to schedule them for a telephone interview prior to the Sept. 3 sunshine council meeting," Metcalf said following the private meeting. "We are still moving forward and I believe we will meet the Sept. 14 deadline."
Metcalf said he anticipates the public being asked to help with the process when the final candidates are invited to the city for interviews.
Each council member has selected a representative for the public review committee.
Council started advertising for the vacant city manager position in June following Cathy Davison's resignation from the job on May 13, ending her 38-month tenure.
Metcalf said 34 people submitted applications for the position.
The job advertisement said the city has a population of 18,000 residents and has an annual budget of $11.3 million.
The charter states the city manager will "be responsible for complete operation of a full service city and all service and safety departments. The salary is open and the successful applicant shall, within six months of appointment, establish and maintain residence in Steubenville."
The city charter requires applicants to possess an "undergraduate degree in public administration, business administration or related field and have at least two years of experience as a city manager or assistant city manager or in the alternative have at least 10 years of experience as a city manager."
According to the city charter, "Once the applicant is chosen, the said applicant must be on the job within 30 days from the date he or she is hired."
Mayor Domenick Mucci is currently serving as acting city manager, receiving a salary from both positions.
