Milton Recertified for Department of Transportation Testing

September 3, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Dr. Clark Milton, director of Wheeling Hospital's Corporate Health Center, recently became the only physician within 30 miles federally certified to administer physicals for commercial motor vehicle drivers.

Milton was certified to provide the medical exams by the U.S. Department of Transportation and is listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. Refresher training is required every five years, and those administering tests must pass the Medical Examiner Certification Test every 10 years.

Only driver certificates issued by examiners on the National Registry are considered valid by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Previously, any health care provider could provide the exams. But beginning in 2014, new FMCSA regulations require that those administering the physicals be certified and on the National Registry.

"We wanted to stay ahead of the game," Milton said. "A lot of physicians, as well as trucking and bus companies, don't know about the new regulation yet. So we're trying to get the word out."

Wheeling Hospital's Corporate Health Center provides customized services to meet the health care needs of businesses and industries throughout the region. It works with employers to promote health and wellness among their employees through education, screenings, testing and treatments. Milton can be reached at 304-243-3784.
