MORRISTOWN - St. Clairsville's volleyball team was stuck in neutral early on Tuesday evening, but once the Red Devils got their engine revving it couldn't be stopped.

Brigee Mick scored 16 points, with five aces and five digs, while Rebekah Sadlowski had 15 points, with five aces and four kills as St. Clairsville swept Union Local 25-22, 25-17 and 25-11 in a clash of OVAC Class 4A squads at Union Local High School.

Gabbie Espen added 21 assists and six points for St. C., which improved to 5-1 on the season and kept pace with Meadowbrook in the race for the best record in 4A.

The Jets fell to 2-4.

''We had to work on fighting back when things weren't going our way,'' Red Devils coach Christa Truchan said. ''Coming off a tough loss against Shenandoah that was one of the things we needed to improve on. I was really proud of the girls for being able to come back.''

Truchan was referring to the first set, where the Red Devils scored the final 11 points to rally.

The Jets jumped out 22-14 before watching their Belmont County foes steal the momentum.

''We have a lot of talent, we're just not ready to take that next step yet,'' UL coach Karl Penz said.

Like many young teams, Penz said St. C.'s rally took the air out of his squad's tires.

''We're still working on maintaining our confidence in situations like that,'' he said.

The Red Devils prolonged their scoring spree into the second set, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage.

The Jets didn't go down quietly, however, trimming the deficit to 13-7. But the Red Devils fashioned another surge to take the set and, for all intents and purposes, the match.

Alexis St. Clair added six kills and four digs for the Red Devils.

Devin Earliwine had 12 points and three digs for Union Local. Madie Schafer added nine points and 10 assists, Mikayla Patton had six kills, and Kaitlynn Clark-Patterson and Cortney Otto each made four blocks.

''They just don't want to lose,'' Truchan said of her team. ''Everyone picks each other up. That's a team strength. We just need to continue it on the court when things don't go our way.''
