Football: Brooke Sees an Opportunity Against University

September 12, 2013
By JIM ELLIOTT , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

When Brooke coach Sean Blumette looked at his schedule, he figured there were some teams that would probably beat his club. And he figured there were some teams his club would beat.

The key to a successful season, he figured, would be to flip the script on a few of those the Bruins ''shouldn't'' win.

So where does Friday night's game against University fit into all of this?

''I'd call it an opportunity game,'' Blumette said. ''We have a great opportunity against a good team in front of our home crowd.''

About that home crowd.

Also prior to the season, University coach John Kelley looked at his team's

schedule and circled this stretch - back-to-back games at Brooke and Wheeling Park -

and figured these trips to the Ohio Valley would go a long way in determining the fortunes of his club.

It's been a fairly easy go of it for the Hawks thus far. They're coming off a 63-0 victory last week and have outscored their foes 91-7 in two games this season.

Quarterback Travis Renner is 16 of 24 for 234 yards and two touchdowns, plus an additional 77 yards on 22 carries. Running back Tyler Piktel has 132 yards on 32 carries and three touchdowns, while Isaiah Utt has 64 yards on 16 carries, plus three touchdowns.

''They're a good football team,'' Blumette said. ''When you look at them on film, you don't see a weakness.''

The Hawks' leading receiver - and the only player on the club with more than two catches - is Jack Armstrong, who has 127 yards on seven catches, an average of 18.4 yards per reception.

Brooke, which has already suffered a loss to one Morgantown-based team, broke into the wins column with a victory against Allderdice in a game in which quarterback Aaron rushed for 162 yards and three scores.

Nick Ossman added 136 yards on 25 carries.

''It was nice to get that victory,'' Blumette said.
