Festival Offers a Taste of the Good Old Days

The two-day Elizabethtown Festival begins at 10 a.m. today at the former West Virginia Penitentiary.

Mayor Gene Saunders will read a proclamation and members of the Moundsville Economic Development Council, representatives of the city of Moundsville, the Marshall County Commission, the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, Pastor Earl Shaw Jr. and the Sons of the American Revolution will cut the ribbon.

The festival is an early 1800s heritage event honoring the town founders, the Joseph and Elizabeth Tomlinson family.

Hours for the event will be 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission fee. The entrance is through the Eighth Street Wagon Gate.

The lineup of events today will include:

Music by Stevie Boles at 10:30 a.m.; music with Tim Benson at noon; Irish music by Dan Possumato at 1:15 p.m.; a cookie contest at 2 p.m. and, at the same time, an introduction to genealogy by the Sons of the American Revolution; the annual pie contest will be at 2:30 p.m.; an Appalachian Music Gathering will take place outside at 2:30 p.m., with anyone with musical talent invited to participate; Tim Benson will be featured a second time at 3:30 p.m.; square dancing will take place at 4:30 p.m. on the outside stage.

From 6-9 p.m. entertainment will include music by Mary Blake and Eric Wellman from 6-7 p.m.; at 7 p.m., there will be a bonfire and S'more making. The National Pike Pickers will provide music from 7:15 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Vendors and demonstrators will open their booths at 10 a.m. Sunday with the first musical entertainment to be the West Virginia Mule Road Show at 11 a.m. Tim Benson will again provide music at 12:30 p.m.

Traditional dancing by the Heritage Dance Association will take place at 1:30 p.m., with members of the group dedicated to the preservation of traditional dance forms.

A gospel sing will take place at 2 p.m., as will an introduction to genealogy by the Sons of the American Revolution. Tim Benson will be featured at 3:30 p.m.
