GADSDEN, Ala. - Steven Clay Kyle Jr., wanted locally for the attempted murder of another man on Wheeling Island last month, was arrested Wednesday by Alabama authorities.
Kyle, 22, of Cleveland was arrested by deputies with the Etowah County Sheriff's Department in Gadsden, Ala., a city about 50 miles northeast of Birmingham.
Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger did not know the circumstances of Kyle's arrest or what he was doing in Alabama. Gadsden police did not return phone calls seeking comment Thursday.
Alabama authorities contacted Wheeling police at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to say they had Kyle in custody. Wheeling police confirmed they had an active warrant for Kyle and said they were willing to extradite him back to West Virginia.
According to court officials in Alabama, an extradition hearing had not been scheduled on Thursday.
Kyle allegedly shot Darrelle Strowder multiple times in his upper body on Sept. 21 while the two were inside a home at 22 Vermont St. Strowder, 27, also of Cleveland, was transported to a local hospital and survived.
Kyle himself was shot at the same home on Vermont Street nearly a year ago. No arrests have been made in that shooting.
Police said Kyle and Strowder frequently stay with various individuals in the Wheeling area. It is not known what they were doing in Wheeling at the time of the shooting.
