Steven Kyle Jr., who fled to Alabama after allegedly shooting a man at a Wheeling Island home last month, has been returned to the Northern Panhandle and is scheduled to appear in court next week.

Kyle, 22, of Cleveland, was booked into the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville on Friday. The following day, he was arraigned on a single count of attempted murder. He remained jailed in lieu of $50,000 bond late Wednesday.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday in front of Ohio County Magistrate Patty Murphy. Assistant Public Defender Keith Hart has been appointed to represent Kyle.

Police say Kyle shot 27-year-old Darrell Stowder at about 4 a.m. Sept. 21 while the two were inside a home on Vermont Street. Investigators announced they had identified Kyle as the suspect and issued warrants for his arrest.

He was taken into custody Oct. 3 by law enforcement in Gadsden, Ala., a city about 50 miles northeast of Birmingham.

Officers responding to the report of shots fired found Strowder, also of Cleveland, outside of the home. He was suffering from gunshot wounds to his arms and back. He was transported to a local hospital, treated and released.

Hours after the shooting, at 8 a.m., a "reliable confidential informant" told detectives they witnessed Kyle shoot Strowder, court filings state.

The witness said they spent much of the previous night and that morning with Strowder, and accompanied him to the Vermont Street home, where the pair encountered Kyle. Strowder and Kyle were arguing, the witness said, when they heard a "loud bang."

The informant turned and saw Kyle fire several shots from a handgun at Strowder, according to filings.

Kyle himself was shot at the same home on Vermont Street a year ago. No arrests have been made in that shooting.

Police said Kyle and Strowder frequently stay in the Wheeling area, and live with various residents during their time here. It is not known what they were doing in Wheeling at the time of the shooting.
