More than 200 illegal dumping sites have been identified in Belmont County. Even one is too many - but 200? That's outrageous.
Sheriff David Lucas told county commissioners this week his department frequently receives complaints about illegal dumping. But because of other priorities, little can be done about the problem, Lucas added.
That may be changing. On Wednesday, commissioners entered into a one-year contract with the JB Green Team to conduct a campaign against littering and illegal dumping. A deputy sheriff will work full-time with the program.
That should help. Those found dumping garbage, trash, construction refuse, etc. illegally should be penalized severely. Once a few stiff fines are levied, the word may get around that illegal dumping is not worth the risk.
Commissioners are to be commended for entering into the contract.
