MOUNDSVILLE - The Marshall County Fairgrounds is known for always having its fair share of mud, making it the perfect setting for the first Redneck Monster 5K Run set for this Sunday.
In this event, participants will be challenged with at least 10 obstacles, including a 30-foot balance beam and 12-foot high A-frame to climb over and a net of barbed wire to crawl under on a 3.1-mile course around the fairgrounds. And, yes, there will be plenty of mud and water to trudge through in between.
According to event coordinator Neil Burkett, 80 percent of the proceeds from the run will go toward restoring the Valley Fork Youth baseball fields and the Sam Shaw Walking Trail, which were damaged by flooding this past summer. The remaining funds will go toward paying for the event.

"The fairgrounds have always had a lot of people help us, so we want to give something back," Burkett said. "Hopefully we can make this bigger in future years and be able to donate to future organizations."
According to Burkett, the course will begin at the fairground grandstand, lead into the walking trail, cross the creek and loop back to the fairgrounds ending at the grandstand. Those who do not want to run or go through the obstacles are free to walk the course and alternative routes will be marked, Burkett said. Registration for the event will begin at 11 a.m. and the first wave of competitors will go out at 1 p.m.
Participants are also encouraged to wear creative costumes during the run for a chance to win a cash prize for best costume determined by an on-site penny war. Spectators will vote for best costume or team costume with loose change.
Early registration, which grants a lower fee, has been extended until Oct. 31 and forms can be downloaded from the Marshall County Fair's website. All participants will receive a t-shirt included in their entry fee. Forms can be dropped off at #1 Sports Fan on First Street or participants can sign up the day of the event. Participants must be at least 14 years old and have parent-signed waiver if under 18.
