Thomas Vapner

VAPNER, Thomas "Tister" J., 94, of Wheeling WV, died October 30 2013, at Liza's Place, Wheeling.

He was born December 5, 1918, in Benwood, WV, a son of the late Peter and Magdeline (Mohar) Vapner

Thomas was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Wheeling, He retired in 1981 from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel, Benwood Works where he worked for 46 years, attended Union High School, World War II Army Veteran, he was inducted into the 816th Aviation Engineers in 1942, served his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri then he was shipped over seas without a furlough August, 1942.

Thomas spent 42 months in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Luxenburg and Czechoslovakia. He was shipped home and discharged October, 1, 1945. He received 5 Battle Stars. Thomas also was a member of the American Legion since 1945, was the oldest living member of the McMechen-Benwood VFW Post 3655 which he belonged to for 65 years and former member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene "Betty" Vargo Vapner; brother, Joseph Vapner; four sisters, Catherine, Ann, Barbara and Olga Vapner.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. (Lana) and Michael A. (Cheryl) Vapner, both of Wheeling; five grandchildren, Michelle, Nathan and Jessica all of Wheeling, Mica (Chris) Partridge of Morgantown, WV and Valerie Vapner of Riceville, TN; two great-grandchildren, Curtis and Mischa McGhee both of Wheeling; brother, Albert Vapner of Benwood, WV and daughter-in-law, Nancy Vapner of Wheeling.

Friends will be received from 2-8 p.m. Friday, November 1 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove, WV, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m, Saturday, November 2, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Gary P. Neagele serving as celebrant. Entombment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling.
