Schools Concerned Over Lack of Math Teacher

November 13, 2013
By SARAH HARMON - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Staff and parents expressed concerns there is a need for a full-time math teacher this semester for the seventh and 11th grade students at Cameron Middle and High Schools at the Marshall County Board of Education meeting Tuesday at the high school.

During a presentation from Cameron's High School's Local School Improvement Council, teacher Whitney Healy stressed the two grade's math labs have been taught by a substitute teacher without a math background since the beginning of the school year and the school is concerned the students will fall behind the state's standards in math.

"Our concern with the 11th grade is those students are going to be tested," Healy said. "It's not that the substitute isn't doing her job, but she does not have a math degree. We are very concerned their test scores are going to reflect that. For seventh grades, they are in a situation where they are self-teaching. It makes me concerned about the test scores coming up."

According to district Curriculum Director Woody Yoder, the school had found a qualified teacher for the 11th grade for the rest of the semester, but were still searching to hire a qualified teacher for seventh grade, noting they had not received any applicants after advertising locally and statewide.

The board also unanimously voted to suspend a teacher for three days without pay after going into executive session for approximately 20 minutes. Superintendent Michael Hince said the county is not releasing the name of the employee and would not comment on the nature of the incident, stating it is a personnel matter.

In other business, the board voted to hire Engineering Consulting Services Mid-Atlantic LLC in Pittsburgh, Pa. to perform construction quality assurance testing and inspection services for the John Marshall High School Renovation Project.

According to Hince, the firm is hired as a third party assurance agency that performs field and laboratory testing and inspection services before any renovation work.
