Walter Masters

MASTERS, Walter E., 88, Our Hero, father, and friend of Moundsville, WV died Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at home.

He was born January 7, 1925 in Wheeling, WV the son of the late Walter E. Masters and Doris M. Stewart Masters Brunsgaard.

He grew up in Hundred, WV and in 1943 answered the call of duty to serve his country in WWII. He enlisted in the Marines and served as the Captain's bodyguard on the battleship New Jersey in the South Pacific.

On April 10, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Madge Louise Oliver.

He was employed and retired after 30 years, as a foreman with Allied Chemical; was a dedicated member of Hillview Terrace Church of Christ, where he served as Elder for 35 years; and was a volunteer at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, as well as, Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization, where he was chosen as Big Brother of the Year in 2011.

Walter had many passions in life; his church, his family and friends, and "Big Blue," his antique GMC truck. He loved all things aviation, as well as, trains, boats, and cars. He loved to laugh, to help others less fortunate and embraced life with joy! He loved nature and saw beauty in the everyday. He was grateful to God for all his many blessings.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Masters; and a brother, Donald Masters.

Including his loving wife of 68 years, Madgie; surviving are three sons, Dan (Linda) Masters, and Mitchell Masters, all of Moundsville, and Jeffery Masters of Portland, OR; a daughter, Laura (Peter) Price of Dayton, OH; a sister, Eileen McMahon of Shadyside, OH; grandchildren, Matthew (Jodi), Michelle, Molly, Amanda, and Dana; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Michael, Gwen, and Henry; several loving nieces and nephews; and Little Brother, Robert Dobkin of Wheeling.

Family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 400 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville where funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. with Evangelist D. Gene West officiating.

Interment in Riverview Cemetery, Moundsville.
