No. 2 West Liberty Cruises Past UC

CHARLESTON - The No. 2-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team led wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon in breezing to an 89-76 victory against previously unbeaten Charleston.

Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers (4-0 overall, 1-0 MEC) opened a double-digit lead in the first 10 minutes and maintained that margin for most of the day, turning aside a pair of UC (3-1, 0-1) surges down the stretch.

Cedric Harris led all scorers with 26 points for West Liberty while Shawn Dyer knocked down 12 of his 18 points in the second half.

Keene Cockburn and C.J. Hester helped stake the Hilltoppers to a whopping 40-26 edge off the boards as Cockburn posted his second career double-double with 13 points and 14 boards while Hester just missed with a dozen points and nine rebounds.

Aleksander Kesic had 23 points for Charleston.

Crutchfield moved 200 games over the .500 mark, improving to 245-45 (.845) in his 10th season with the Hilltoppers.

Wheeling Jesuit 87, West Virginia State 71

INSTITUITE- Justin Fritts had a big day with 30 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a victory against West Virginia State.

Matt Stewart came off the bench to add 19 points and Eric Siefert contributed 17 for the Cardinals. Kyle Ritz had a game-high 10 rebounds for WJU.

The Yellow Jackets were led by 16 points from Dominic Phillips. Angelo Sirianni had 12 points and Anton Hutchins contributed 11.

OUL 87, OUE 81

ST. CLAIRSVILLE -The OUE Panthers lost their fourth of five games to start the season with a setback to OU Lancaster.

The hole was dug just too deep as the Cougars hot shooting put the Panthers behind 49-35 at halftime.

Lancaster made nine 3-pointers in the first half and easily outrebounded the Panthers. OUE was led with another fine performance by Devin Ward. He poured in 44 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Nick Schuetz recorded a double-double by scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Brandt Thieman finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.

WOMEN

West Liberty 84, UC 80

CHARLESTON - Kailee Howe poured in a career-high 36 points and West Libertyovercame serious foul problems to hand Charleston its first loss.

Coach Lynn Ullom's Hilltoppers (2-3, 1-0) never trailed in the first half but the Golden Eagles (4-1, 0-1) hit 15 of 19 shots from the foul line in the first 20 minutes to trail just 38-37 at the break.

Howe stuffed the stat sheet with 36 points, eight rebounds and five steals in a dazzling performance while Jasmin Kiley, who played all 40 minutes, finished with 17 points. Liz Flowers had a dozen points in her limited action while Jasmin Kiley grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and scored four of her six points in the final tow minutes.

Lockhart's 17 points led six double-figure scorers in a well-balanced Golden Eagles attack.

OUE 86, OUL 80

ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The Lady Panthers (6-0, 3-0) took control of the conference with a hard fought victory against OU Lancaster (5-3).

Monroe Central's Alex Kuhn led the way with 19 points and five assists. Shadyside's Kelsey Holloway chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds.

Monroe Central's Chelsie Roberts added 14 points and eight rebounds, Union Local's Alexus Davis finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Buckeye Local's Kayla Fillipovich added 10 points and four boards.
