School Helps Former Student

November 29, 2013
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Madison Elementary School students this week challenged themselves and each other to a help a former student battling illness.

Students of the Wheeling Island school raised more than $1,200 to benefit former Madison student Michael Carroll and his charity "Michael's Meanies," which provides sick children with stress balls to deal with difficult feelings. Carroll is a leukemia survivor now battling neuroblastoma.

Over the course of three days, Madison students took part in "change wars," in which classes competed to collect the most coins. Students also purchased "Team Michael" wristbands, showing support for Carroll. Madison staff members held a casual dress day and each member who took part donated at least $5 for the cause.

Madison Elementary School counselor Jessica Laslo said students and staff members were very enthusiastic in supporting Caroll's dream of helping other children and the "Michael's Meanies" project.

"We have seen so much caring and compassion coming for our students this week," she said.
