Hunt Continues for Robber, Shooter

December 19, 2013
By HEATHER ZIEGLER - Associate City Editor , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

Wheeling police officers continue searching for the person who assaulted an employee at the Gumby's Cigarette and Beer World store on North River Road and then robbed the business at gunpoint on Tuesday night.

Police said they received a call at 8:16 p.m. Tuesday and arrived on the scene within two minutes. The robber had fled the scene on foot, running north on the city's walking trail located behind the business. He was described as a light-skinned black man believed to be in his 20s, approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build. He was wearing a blue jumpsuit or coveralls, a gray hood over his head, sunglasses and a bandana around his face.

Video surveillance from the business was obtained by the on-call detective for review.

According to a police report, the suspect struck the Gumby's employee in the head with his gun. She was transported to Wheeling Hospital for treatment of her injury. Police said the injury was not life threatening.

There were no other employees in the store at the time.

The report did not indicate what was taken in the robbery.

Meanwhile, about an hour later Tuesday night, police responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of South Wabash Street on Wheeling Island.

The call came into 911 dispatch at 9:15 p.m., and when officers arrived on the scene, they found that a house on the block had at least three bullet holes through the back wall. None of the residents inside were struck by the gunfire. After talking with residents in the area, officers learned that a dark car, possibly a Dodge, fled the area after the gunshots came from that car.

Police said they could not determine a motive for the shooting.

Police are asking for the public's help. Anyone who may have information regarding either incident should contact the Wheeling Police Department at 304-234-3781.
