The Wheeling Nailers and the Ohio County Family Resource Network have come together to collect school supplies for students in Ohio County.
The Ohio County Family Resource Network, its Early Childhood School Readiness Team and the Wheeling Nailers have organized a mid-year school supply drive to restock school supplies for those students whose families may not have the ability to provide them.
The school supply drive is taking place from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday at WesBanco Arena, just prior to the Nailers' home game. Items needed include new bookbags, pencils, notebook paper, spiral notebooks, erasers, rulers, colored pencils, crayons, scissors, glue and other common school supplies.
The Readiness Team worked to assess the needs of the community and in doing so, discovered that by January, many children's supplies are depleted or are in poor condition. Some parents are not financially stable enough following Christmas to purchase those supplies and teachers often reach into their own pockets to fill the gap.
Other team members include Child Care Resource Center, West Virginia Birth to Three, Northern Panhandle Head Start, Marshall County Family Resource Center, Sexual Assault Help Center, Ohio County Schools, Youth Services System, Catholic Charities and UniCare.
"The supplies will be sorted and distributed the week following the drive," Raymer said.
In addition to the school supply drive it also will be Fantastic Night/Girl Scout Night with free youth backpacks given to the first 1,000 children courtesy of Lewis Financial Group.
