Nailers Shutout by Missiaen, Greenville

January 18, 2014
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Jason Missiaen spent the first part of the 2013-14 season in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolf Pack. Saturday night, he played in his first ECHL game of the campaign, and turned in a perfect effort for the Greenville Road Warriors.

The 6-foot-8 goaltender turned away all 40 shots he faced, blanking the Wheeling Nailers, 3-0, at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, the Road Warriors started the scoring at the 5:19 mark of the second, while playing on the man advantage. Mike Marcou teed up a shot from the right point, which got blocked in the slot. Todd Hosmer found the loose puck in skates, shifted it to his left, and slid a shot into the left side of the goal.

Later in the period, Greenville received a glorious opportunity to extend the lead as Dustin Stevenson received a major penalty and a game misconduct for boarding. However, Mike Condon stood on his head, making a pile of 10-bell saves, keeping the score 1-0 after two.

Early in the third period, the Road Warriors grabbed an insurance goal. Once again, Marcou began the play, letting a shot go from the right point. Condon made a kick save, but the rebound was bounced into the net by Andrew Rowe, who was crashing into the slot.

With 11:36 remaining, Greenville upped its lead to three when Marc-Olivier Vallerand redirected Sam Klassen's shot from the left point. The Nailers had a pair of power plays in the third, but couldn't dent the twine.

Condon stopped 38 of the 41 shots he faced for Wheeling, but suffered a tough-luck loss.

The Nailers will continue their six-game road trip at 12:30 p.m. on Monday against the Gwinnett Gladiators. Wheeling's next home game takes place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, when they play host to the Cincinnati Cyclones.
