Davis Receives Mr. Mat Award

WHEELING - Coach Darrell Davis graduated from Dover High School in 1968 where he excelled in track, wrestling and football. His senior season in football the Dover Tornadoes went undefeated with Darrell starting at tackle. He matriculated to Dakota State College in Madison, S.D. He was a four-year starter at offensive tackle and his team won the Boot Hill Bowl in 1971.

He graduated in 1972 with a degree in education. In August of that year he accepted a position at Barnesville High School where he taught and coached for 35 years retiring in June of 2008.

Davis enjoyed tremendous success as Barnesville High School girls' track coach and the offensive line coach of the football program. He served two separate stints as assistant wrestling coach and nine years as head coach of the Shamrocks.

As a mat mentor, Davis coached no less than 42 OVAC place winners including nine champions. He also produced 53 district place winners, 20 district champs, 13 state place winners, and two state titlists. His teams were OVAC division champions or runners-up in six of his nine seasons as head coach.

The pinnacle of his coaching career came during the 1984 and 1985 wrestling seasons. Coach Davis' 1984 team won the Ohio AA State Title and he was named the Ohio State AA Coach of the Year. In 1985, his Shamrock team won the "overall" title at the Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament. He was also honored that same year by the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club for his coaching achievements in wrestling and track.

Three of Davis' wrestlers went on to excel at the college level. Alan Logan (current head football coach at Muskingum University) placed sixth at the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Tournament. Don Moxley went on to wrestle at Ohio State University and won the Big 10 heavyweight championship his senior season.

Tim Moxley, two-time State Wrestling Champion, went on to play football at Ohio State where he was a starting offensive tackle for three years, including two Bowl teams.

Darrell Davis was also the tournament director for the Barnesville Invitational Tournament and the Eastern District Sectional Tournament for 25 years.

His family includes: son Bryce, daughter in-law Angie, grandchildren: Brooke and Kirkland of Cambridge. Daughter Ammie, son in-law Darrin and grandson Jacob live in Barnesville.

For his contributions to Ohio Valley Wrestling and its student-athletes, Coach Darrell Davis has been selected as the 2014 Mr. Mat award winner.
