Cameron Runs Winning Streak to Seven in Row

Everyone plays, contributes in 82-25 rout of Hundred - By DAVE MORRISON Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

CAMERON - On Senior Night, Cameron's Zach Hall, himself a senior, made a supreme sacrifice.

Hall, one of six seniors on the team, was in the original starting lineup against Hundred. Coach Chad Clutter was going to start the five seniors who had been with the program all four years.

Instead, Hall, a regular starter anyway, opted out right before the team came back on the court, so a fellow senior could start.

It was an act of kindness among the close-knit Cameron seniors.

In the end, it didn't matter. All 11 Cameron players played, and contributed in the Dragons' 82-25 victory against struggling Hundred at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

"I had the lineup set, but Zach came to me after we left the floor at the eight-minute mark (before tipoff) and asked if his teammate could start," Clutter said. "It was really nice of him to offer up that spot. I was going to play the seniors in the first quarter. These guys are really close."

The victory was the seventh straight for surging Cameron, now 13-6 on the season.

The seniors did their part in the first quarter, most notably Hall, who entered early and had eight points as Dragons went ahead 13-2.

In the second quarter, the starters entered and the 'Routt,' as in Logan Routt, was on.

Probably best know as the nation's tallest quarterback at 6-foot-10, the junior scored 12 points and had eight rebounds as Cameron put together a 32-point quarter.

The highlight of the night for Hundred was when the it took a 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws by Danny Stewart. After that Cameron proceeded to score 43 straight points before Holden Moore had a free throw to end the carnage.

The Dragons led 45-3 at the half and Hundred was still looking for a field goal.

"When you can come with a 6-foot-10 guy off the bench, that just makes it worse," Hundred coach Brian Bartlett said. "Cameron has a great team and they are playing really well. We're young, we have a lot of freshmen and sophomores. We have three players that have any kind of varsity experience.

"It's hard to be in that situation. I told the kids at the half to just keep shooting and keep looking for opportunities."

Clutter went to his seniors early and often and all contributed in some facet.

Hall had 14 points and nine rebounds, Dylan Coulter had 14, Skyler Canas had 10, Joey Yoho had four points and five rebounds and Austin Pegg had two points and six boards. The only senior who didn't score, Shane Williams, had four rebounds and has had a pair of double-figure games for the Dragons of late.

Routt, who played less than two quarters, led the way, with 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots, but altered several others.

He finished off the night with a nice assist to younger brother Trey for an easy layin early in the fourth quarter.

"He's been playing well (during the seven-game winning streak)," Clutter said. "He had a 30-point game against St. Marys and a 27-point game against Toronto. He recently set our school-record for blocked shots in a season."

Cameron plays host to Magnolia on Monday night in a game that won't have any bearing in sectional seeding, with coaches seeds due in that day at Noon. It could be a preview of a sectional tournament opener which would be at Magnolia, or Cameron, which will likely finish fifth in the section, and could face Madonna. If that is the matchup, it would pit the nation's tallest quarterback in Routt against the nation's tallest lineman in 7-2 Josh Martin.

For Hundred, Bartlett is just looking for improvement

"It's what I tell the kids every game, just work to improve your game and get better," Bartlett said. "It's a struggle but they are going to get better."

Moore was a bright spot for Hornets. The sophomore had 14 of his team's 25 points.
