Irene Romano

February 23, 2014
The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

ROMANO, Irene Kostin, 61, passed away at her residence in Wheeling, WV, on Tuesday, February 18, 2014.

She was born October 22, 1952, in New York City, New York, the daughter of Maria Chimicz and the late Filimon Kowtoniuk and was a devout Russian Orthodox Christian.

Irene was a very dedicated and loving wife, mother ("mumsy"), grandmother and friend to many. She enjoyed gardening, was an amazing cook, and an avid reader. She loved all types of music, which ranged from the Golden Oldies to Russian traditional music. Filipp Kirkorov, Alla Pugacheva, and the Bee Gees were among her favorite artists. She was intelligent, funny, witty, and always enjoyed being involved in conversation. Irene was that person whom you could talk to about everything and always enjoyed a good laugh. Even at the expense of her own health, she always put her family and loved ones first. One of her most important involvements was being an advocate for people with chronic illnesses, which inspired her to create a blog where those who were suffering could come together and support each other.

She was preceded in death by her father, Filimon Kowtoniuk, and her uncle, Bill Bulyga.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, Maria, are her loving husband of 37 years, Dr. Thomas James Romano; her three children, Victoria Romano, Nicholas Romano and his wife, Fara, and Andrew Romano, all of Wheeling, WV; a grandson, Aiden Scott Romano; a brother, Walter Kowtoniuk and his wife, Carol, and several nieces and nephews, as well as her best friend of 40 years, Linda Barna.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. John the Divine Greek Orthodox Church, Wheeling, WV.

Arrangements by the Kepner Funeral Home, 900 National Rd, Wheeling, WV (304 232-2732).

Memorial contributions may be made to CFIDS Association of America, www.cfids.org.

Personal condolences may be offered to the family at www.kepnerfuneral.com.
