Wheeling police investigating a reported stabbing at the Patterson Ballfield in Elm Grove Monday later found out things weren't exactly as they seemed.

"Nobody got stabbed," said Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger. "There was a domestic disturbance between a man and a woman and at some point, some glass got broken causing minor injuries to the man and the couple's 15-month-old child."

Several police units responded to an 8:34 a.m. Monday call at a Columbia Avenue home where a man and woman were involved in a domestic dispute.

Schwertfeger believes the man reported the incident as a stabbing to divert attention away from his girlfriend with whom he had been fighting.

Schwertfeger said it isn't clear who started the fight.

He said the case has been forwarded to the Ohio County Prosecutor's Office to determine if any charges will be filed.

Officers contacted Child Protective Services regarding the injured child.
