CARROLL, Sister Marianne (Joan Euphrasia), daughter of the late John J. and Louise Ebbert Carroll, died at Mount St. Joseph on Friday, March 21, 2014.
She was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, on March 25, 1922.
She attended Beech Hill Elementary and St. Clairsville High schools in St. Clairsville, Ohio. By way of ministry preparation, Sister Marianne attended the Elliott Business School in Wheeling. Later she received a bachelor of education degree in business and English as well as a masters degree in library science from Duquesne University.
Sister Marianne entered the Congregation of St. Joseph in Wheeling on January 6, 1941 from her home parish of St. Mary's in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Upon reception into the novitiate, she received a new name in religion, Sister Marianne. She made temporary profession of vows in 1943 and final profession of vows on August 19, 1946. As she celebrated her 70th anniversary of entrance on August 27, 2011, she reminisced, "I never realized the four-letter word 'gift' could hold so much richness. I have been gifted in so many ways. God has gifted me first of all with himself, then my family, friends, spiritual directors, and for the last 70 years with my Sisters of St. Joseph. The 50-plus years spent in the school system truly enriched my life. God's young people showed me the importance of staying young in mind and heart. My gratitude reaches out to all who have touched my mind, my heart, my whole life."
Sister Marianne's ministry experience has been largely as a teacher and librarian in diocesan secondary schools: St. Mary and Notre Dame in Clarksburg; St. Joseph in Huntington; St. Patrick in Weston; St. Joseph Academy and Central Catholic High Schools in Wheeling; St. Joseph Preparatory Seminary in Vienna; and Charleston Catholic High School. Within the Wheeling congregation, she provided leadership as a general councilor and as vice-president. Sister Marianne retired to Mount St. Joseph in 1997 where she continued to serve as librarian until 2012.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George A. Carroll, John J. Carroll and Eugene A. Carroll; and her sisters, Mary V. Carroll and Dorothy Singleton.
