BOTIZAN, Gregory Donald, 58, was entered to rest Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at York Hospital surrounded by loved ones.
He was born in Wheeling, W.Va., on November 14, 1955, the son of Eugene (Gene) Botizan and the late Stella Obyc Botizan.
He was Catholic by faith. He attended Blessed Trinity Grade School on Wheeling Island, and graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1975.
While attending Central, he had a stellar athletic career. He earned multiple letters in three sports: football, baseball and track (pole vault). As a football player he received numerous awards: All City, All Valley, All Mountaineer, All OVAC, All Steel Valley, All State and All American. He was offered scholarships by Fairmont State and various WVIAC schools. He chose to walk on at Marshall University where an injury ended his playing career.
He was formerly employed at Wausau Windows and Wall Systems, and Graham Agricultural Products, as a field service manager. He was currently employed by the Catholic Diocese of York, Pennsylvania.
While residing in York, he coached at York Catholic as the 7th and 8th grade head coach and served as the defensive back and receiver coach at the York County School of Technology.
He was preceded in death by his mother, the Late Stella Obyc Botizan.
He is survived by his father, Eugene "Gene" Botizan; two brothers, David and his wife Tama, and his twin brother, Donnie; one sister, Cindi Botizan; his companion and love of his life, Ann Kerchner; one step-son, Bobby Niemeyer; one step-grandson, Jaxson; and numerous nephews, nieces, and great nieces.
Friends will be received for a memorial gathering on Friday, March 28, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Douglas Ondeck as celebrant.
Entombment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling.
