WHEELING - Participants in the 38th annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic and 5K events, set for May 24 in downtown Wheeling, will have an opportunity to "load up on carbs" Friday night before the race or on Saturday after the race.

A spaghetti dinner will be available for paid race participants at River City Ale Works at 14th and Main streets beginning at 4 p.m. May 23. Or participants may choose to enjoy the spaghetti meal after the race up to 1 p.m. May 24. The meal includes spaghetti and marinara sauce, a side salad and water. The public also can purchase the spaghetti meal.

Race participants will be provided a food voucher that will be attached to the racer's bib in the race packets. Race packets for all pre-registered participants can be picked up at the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center on Main Street from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 23 and from 6:15 a.m. May 24 until the start of the race at 8 a.m.

Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Race Director R. “Scat” Scatterday and race Co-Director Shellie Higgins examine race flyers that explain new food options for race participants.

No registrations will be accepted on Saturday.

Race Co-Director Shellie Higgins said race participants may decide to enjoy the spaghetti meal at River City or use their vouchers at vendors located on the race grounds at Heritage Port on Saturday. While the list of participating vendors remains to be finalized, Domino's Pizza and the Soup Shack have committed to the event. In addition, River City Ale Works will offer various sandwich wraps at the race grounds.

"The spaghetti dinner is something new for us this year. It's not a banquet, but another food option for 5K and Half Marathon racers," Higgins said.

Race Director R. "Scat" Scatterday said the new food option provides race participants the spaghetti dinner at their convenience.

"It's a way to keep the tradition of a meal with the race, too," Scatterday said. "We think people will like the options we are offering this year."

All proceeds from this year's event will benefit the Wheeling Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 38's Shop with a Cop program.
