Awnings Can Reduce Energy Costs

April 17, 2014
By CASEY JUNKINS - Staff Writer , The Intelligencer / Wheeling News-Register

WHEELING - Installing an awning at your home or business could reduce your summer energy air conditioning costs by up to 40 percent, according to Lisa Martin, co-owner of Wheeling Canvas Products.

The company based in the Fulton section of Wheeling services about 5,000 awnings for customers as far away as Morgantown, Fairmont, St. Clairsville and the Pittsburgh suburbs. However, most of the company's business comes from the Wheeling and Moundsville areas.

"When you see the awnings coming back out, you know spring is here," Martin said. "We have been extremely busy getting our awnings back out to our customers."

Lisa Martin, co-owner of Wheeling Canvas Products, displays some of the awnings her company offers, including the one covering the space between the two market houses at Wheeling Centre Market.

Martin said her family founded the business in North Wheeling in 1965 before relocating to Fulton in 1996. She said virtually any home or business can benefit from installing an awning.

"In addition to the energy savings, you can prevent your carpet and furniture from fading. You can also cut back on the harmful UV radiation that can cause skin cancer," she said.

Although most of Martin's custom-made awnings are canvas, she said the company also can craft them from vinyl, depending on the customer's needs. She said they can install awnings above doors, porches and patios. The company also offers retractable awnings.

"We are here to meet a customer's needs. We will meet with them, and figure out what they want," Martin said.
