A Marshall County man and a three-year-old child were both injured Sunday after the man crashed an ATV while riding with the child.
According to Benwood Police Chief Frank Longwell, the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Roosevelt Avenue. The driver, Rodney Jay Wayt Jr., of Benwood, reportedly was speeding on the roadway when the ATV's front tire caught on the pavement and ejected both riders.
Neither the man nor the child were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, police said. Alcohol isn't believed to be a factor in the incident.
The child was taken to West Virginia University Children's Hospital in Morgantown for treatment and Wayt was taken to Ohio Valley Medical Center and was released. Longwell was not sure of the child's condition as of Monday.
Longwell said Wayt will likely face a felony charge of child endangerment soon.
"Only a fool would put a three-year-old on an ATV without a helmet and speed up and down on an asphalt road," Longwell said. "Those vehicles aren't made for hard surfaces like concrete."
