Company supervisors wanting to better recognize signs of drug and alcohol effects in the workplace can do so at an upcoming class.
Occupational Health Services at Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital announced this morning that it will hold a reasonable suspicion course for workplace supervisors on May 30.
This marks the first time OVMC is offering the course. Attendees will learn how to recognize and deal with employees who have job performance problems that could be related to alcohol and drugs. Documentation is key to the reasonable suspicion process.

Amy Goodwin, operations manager at Occupational Health Services at East Ohio Regional Hospital, said the booming oil and gas industry, as well as a regional rise in substance abuse issues, makes the May 30 reasonable suspicion course for workplace supervisors relevant for the area.
Such training is required by the Department of Transportation. As the oil and gas industry in the area is booming - and its employees fall under DOT, the course comes at an opportune time.
"They're hiring people so rapidly that supervisors need the training," said Amy Goodwin, operations manager at OHS at East Ohio Regional Hospital.
Goodwin met with Larry Wills and Dwight Newell of Ohio Health Consortium Inc. to learn about different reasonable suspicion services. Wills and Newell are scheduled to speak at the event.
Goodwin also cited the rise of heroin, meth labs and other substance problems as reasons for the course. "Those are issues that we haven't seen in the past that need to be dealt with," she said, emphasizing that a safer work environment is the central focus of offering such education.
The reasonable suspicion course, held in the OVMC Nurses' Residence Auditorium, is also open to supervisors outside of the Department of Transportation's requirements. Those interested can register online at ovmc-eorh.com or contact Laurie Labishak at 304-234-8233.
