WHEELING - Participants in this year's Ogden Half Marathon Classic and related events will see several new features sure to enhance the race day experience.
First, instead of runners and walkers huddling around the outside of Wheeling Coffee waiting for official results to be posted, RS Racing Systems, in charge of the event's timing, will make results available almost immediately via mobile devices such as iPhones and tablets.
RS Racing's Terry Lewis said he will be sending an email out to registered participants this week that will instruct them how to sign up for the service. Those that sign up will receive a text message following the race letting them know their result is available.
There is no charge for the added service, he said.
"This will even work during the race, as when the runner crosses a split, that information will be uploaded," Lewis said. "Say, for example, a family member is watching a loved one race. When that runner crosses the halfway point, within 15 seconds the family member will get a text message giving their time."
Each runner also will be assigned a QR code, which can be used to take them directly to their results following the race.
Lewis said the technology is still relatively new, and is currently in use at marathons such as New York and Boston. It will work for any smartphone or tablet that receives text messages.
"It's great that we are able to bring this technology to the regional level for a race such as the Ogden and others that we time," he said.
The other new feature, in conjunction with the results, is a 15-second video clip of each participant crossing the finish line. Lewis said about a day after the race, each participant, when viewing their results, will be able to see the video as they come down 14th Street. Again, there is no charge for this feature, Lewis said.
