David E. Dean, 90, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, died on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.
He was born April 10, 1924, in Springfield, OH, the son of the late William H. and Asia D. Bailey Dean and was a Protestant.
In WWII, he was a co-pilot on a B17 Flying Fortress with the 483rd Bombardment Group. His plane was shot down over Berlin, and he was captured by the Germans. He was a POW at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany, until the war ended. He continued in the Reserves when he came back to the United States and retired a Major from the United States Air Force.
He retired after 44 years as a Community Relations Manager with Ohio Bell Telephone Co. now known as AT&T in St. Clairsville, OH.
He was a member of Belmont Hills Country Club in St. Clairsville, OH; a member of the Barbed Wire Association for former POWs; member of the Reserve Officers Association; a past President of the Red Cross; one of the founding members of the St. Clairsville Community Development Center; past President of the St. Clairsville Rotary Club; past Board Member of the Salvation Army and the United Way.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna Imo Davidson Dean; a son, David A. Dean; and a brother, Ralph Dean.
Surviving are his sons, Douglas B. Dean and his wife, Cindy of Grove City, OH and Stephen M. Dean and his wife, Carol of Wheeling, WV; two grandsons, Joshua B. Dean and his wife, Jennifer of Grove City, OH and Jared L. Dean who is in the U.S. Navy and on board the USS Carl Vinson; three great-grandchildren, Jovie, Lennon, and Hawken Dean and a special friend, Sara Jo Anderson of Glen Dale, WV.
Friends will be received on Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Kepner Funeral Home, 166 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV, (304-242-2311) where services will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014, at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Wayne Ickes officiating.
Interment will be held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Tremont City, OH.
