Officials in several Ohio Valley communities have either closed municipal swimming pools or are discussing such action, because of tight budgets.
But Benwood's pool is open for the summer, as a result of $35,000 in repairs authorized by City Council. In addition, a last-minute problem with loss of water from the pool was corrected by city employees.
Benwood certainly is not a rich local government. Finding money for the pool work was not easy.
Some Benwood residents may remember the time before municipal pools were opened throughout the area. Then, local residents who wanted to take a dip had to go to the Ohio River, creeks or ponds. Drowning deaths were not uncommon.
By providing a safe, clean pool, Benwood officials are doing more than offering a recreational opportunity. They may well be saving lives.
