The final program of the 31st season of the Showcase concert series will be held at Community Arts Place in Barnesville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7.
Lazy River Jazz Band of Woodsfield will perform a program featuring a repertoire of old and new Dixieland selections.
The band has played on many occasions in and around Monroe County and Marietta for parties, churches and festivals. Most of the band members are retired music teachers who are dedicated to keeping Dixieland music alive. Leader of the ensemble is Paul Ring, an ex-Army bandsman, a graduate of The Ohio State University School of Music and a former band director and school principal.
The group includes Scott Emerick, keyboard; Chuck Mercle, trumpet; Chuck Helbling, trumpet; Roger Brosse, banjo; Steve Casto, drums, and Ring on trombone.
The printed program will include writings by poet Carolyn McCort Vetula of Belmont. She published a book of her poetry, "By Request," in 2009.
Vetula has always had a love of poetry and has won awards for poems. She also is an artist, nature lover and songwriter.
A food stand will be open for the concert. People attending the program should bring lawn chairs. In the event of rain, events will be moved indoors to the Little Rocks Learning Center (former grange hall) on Shamrock Drive. Donations are accepted.
