Joel Shane is an upcoming leader for the Martins Ferry boys' golf team, and it has shown.
"Joel has emerged as the team leader showing more maturity this year both on and off the course," Purple Riders coach Stacy Bliss said. "I expect Joel to hold his own among the best high school golfers in the area. He craves success and performs well under pressure."
On Aug. 22, Shane finished fourth at the Buckeye 8 tournament at Cadiz Country Club. In the first round, the junior shot a 79, and at the end of the day was tied for second. His nine-hole average this season stands at 38.6.
"Joel approaches his golf game very seriously. Not only is he a dedicated individual golfer, but he is a team player supporting and encouraging his teammates," Bliss said. "Joel is an honor student where I have the unique opportunity of being both his golf coach and English teacher."
Shane has an older brother, Taylor, who was a standout golfer for Martins Ferry. Taylor graduated in 2013.
"Joel does not seem to feel pressure to match his brother's course successes although he absolutely has the skills and attitude to accomplish that," Bliss said. "I am hopeful that Joel will perform well in the sectional tournament this year, and if he stays on top of his game, I anticipate that he will see some district play as an individual."
