Laila Ali on Having a Girl: 'I Want a Mini-Me!'
Laila Ali is all about eating right and working out, and that's why she's teamed up with Subway as a "Famous Fan" to help bring awareness to a cause that's close to her heart.
The 33-year-old boxing champ is getting ready to strut her stuff down the runway at tonight's Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection Fashion Show, which will shine a spotlight on the danger of heart disease.
Lailia, who is expecting her second child with husband Curtis Conway, talked to Parade.com about her passion for the campaign. Plus, why she's excited about having a girl.
Working the catwalk at the Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection Fashion Show.
"I am going to be the only pregnant lady walking down the runway, so I'm excited about it. Heart health is very important to me. I know that heart disease is the leading killer of women and a lot of people are just not aware of that. I'm very happy to be a part of this event and help spread awareness. It's also a great way to kick off Fashion Week."
How she stays heart healthy.
"I try to eat as healthy as possible and work out regularly. And I'm on top of my health. I make sure I see my doctor and know what's going on with my health. Those are some of the main things you can do."
Spanx will be her "BFF" on the runway.
"Oh yea, definitely. Always, but especially tonight. They've got the mama Spanx, so I'll be wearing those. My dress is being provided by Pea in a Pod. I've seen the dress and it fits well, so I'll be very comfortable this evening. I'm excited about it."
Baby No. 2 is on the way.
"Being pregnant was pretty easy for me the first time around. This time has been a little different. I've probably gained a little bit more weight. I'm a little more relaxed this time around with my eating! But I'm looking forward to getting back to my old self again after I have the baby."
Preparing for her mini-me.
"I don't feel outnumbered. I actually like being able to say, 'My boys,' speaking of my husband and my son, so I'm not going to be able to say that anymore. But I'm looking forward to having a little girl. At first, I was wanting another boy and then I was seeing all these other mothers out with their mini-me's and I was like, 'I want a mini-me!'"
She hopes to inspire her children to stay active.
"Everything I do is around health and wellness. My kids will definitely compete in sports because I think it's important and healthy for kids when they're young. I think it's really important for us to live by example as parents. There's so many things that we can't prevent, so we need to stay on top of the things that we can prevent."
How Laila's father, boxing great Muhammad Ali, continues to inspire her.
"My dad has always been such a great role model because he's like the most famous man in the world, but he treats everyone the same and with respect and dignity. He is just a very loving person and that is what a lot of people are missing nowadays. Especially celebrities who think they're bigger than life and they forget what's really important. It's about respecting each other. I think if everyone had a little piece of that the world would be a much better place."
