Linsly’s Goodnight, Wheeling Central’s Rine and Steubenville’s Zorne lead 49th Annual All-Valley Baseball Team

Linsly’s Logan Goodnight, Wheeling Central’s Isaac Rine And Steubenville’s Anthony Zorne Captain Annual Squad

The 2016 season turned out to be a fruitful one for many local high school baseball teams, with several making deep tournament runs that capped what overall turned into a very productive campaign. With the season past, The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register present our annual All-Valley Baseball Team, as selected by the newspapers’ sports staff.

Isaac Rine, Wheeling Central (captain)

Wheeling Central made its way down to the state tournament for the first time since 2011. With a talented team, Rine, was a key component to the Maroon Knights. Leading the team in three categories, Rine had a .493 batting average to go along with a .634 on base percentage and was brought home 45 times. With his contributions, Rine was named first team all-state as well as one of the captains for  The Intelligencer/News-Register’s 49th annual All-Valley team.

Logan Goodnight, Linsly (captain)

There is a lot of talent on the 3-A OVAC champion Cadets, and Goodnight put together, yet another great season. Hitting .486, Goodnight tallied 35 hits including five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 25 RBI. He attempted to steal 26 times and was 100 percent successful. With his .598 on base percentage, he was brought home 27 times as well. On the mound, Goodnight, fired 39 strikeouts and posted a 5-0 record with a 1.34 ERA.

Anthony Zorne, Steubenville (captain)

A four-year starter, Anthony Zorne was a true leader on Big Red. With a .426 batting average, he accumulated 32 hits including eight doubles, one triple, one home run and a team-high 31 RBI.

The senior also saw some time on the mound as he tallied a 5-0 record with 30 Ks and compiled an ERA of 2.36.

INFIELD

Tyler Anderson, Magnolia

The lead off batter for the West Virginia Class A Region I, Section I champions had a fine ending to his prep sports career. Batting .449, the senior tallied 30 hits including seven doubles, three triples, one home run and 14 RBI. Anderson also scored 25 runs and had seven stolen bases. He also saw some time at the pitching mound, posting a 4-1 record.

Billy Johnson, Shadyside

In 66 appearances at the plate, Johnson secured a .530 batting average. The power-hitter belted two home runs and two triples along with five doubles to go along with 28 RBI. Johnson only struck out twice during the season.

Michael Mills, Weir

Helping his team to a West Virginia Class AA Region I, Section I title, Mills accumulated a .464 batting average as he tallied 38 hits, a team-high 13 doubles and brought home 25 runs. Mills’ teammates were able to score him 19 times. He saw his time at pitcher too as he fired for seven wins.

Colby Bucher, Valley

Leading the way for the Lumberjacks, Bucher put up an impressive .587 batting average as he had 27 hits including 16 singles, six doubles and five home runs. He tallied 20 RBI and also had .642 on base percentage. However, the most impressive stat, Bucher did not strike out one during the season.

Dustin Redish, Harrison Central

An all-Ohio selection, Redish was a playmaker the minute he stepped on the field for Harrison Central. In his final season as a Huskie, he had a .455 batting average and also secured 27 RBI along with 36 runs scored. He also stole 16 bases and on the mound, had four victories. In sectional play, he threw a no-hitter against Bellaire.

OUTFIELD

Blaze Glenn, Toronto

A three-time OVAC Player of the Year, Glenn put together a season he will remember for the rest of his life. Helping his Toronto squad achieve the No. 1 ranking in Division IV, he hit .432 with 32 hits, including 11 doubles, three triples and four home runs. He was brought home 26 times along with having 25 RBI. His slugging percentage of .824 was also a team-high.

Spencer Rodgers, Wheeling Park

Rodgers just know what winning feels like. During his final season in a Patriots uniform, he helped his team make it to the state tournament for the third straight year. A West Virginia Class AAA, first team all-state selection, Rodgers led his team hitting .390 and complied five doubles, one home run and a .480 on base percentage and accumulated 35 hits.

Colby Lash, Tyler

Consolidated

Leading the Silver Knights with a batting average of .464, Lash earned his spot as he tacked on 39 hits in 84 plate appearances including 10 doubles and one triple and 22 RBI. While on base, he was just as busy as he stole 22 bases and was brought home 30 times.

UTILITY

Jordan Baker, Tyler Consolidated

Baker, a senior could probably play any position on the field and find success. Batting a staggering .411, he belted 30 hits, including eight doubles, one triple and three home runs while bringing home 25 runners. He stole 30 bases and was brought home 31 times. Baker was a reliable force on the mounds as well, posting a 7-1 record with a 2.28 ERA and 53 strikeouts.

Noah Jones, Trinity

A true leader and a true teammate, Jones was a irreplaceable member for his team. The lead off batter and playing every position, the south paw batted .461 with 35 hits, seven doubles, five triples, five home runs and 27 RBI. He was brought home 41 times and had 32 successful steals.

Derek Layton, Fort Frye

For his Cadet teammates, Derek Layton was able to get on base half the times he made a plate appearance (.500 BA). With his 37 hits, he belted six doubles, and an eye-popping 40 RBI to go along with 25 runs scored. On the rubber, he threw 53 strikeouts.

Gage Giovengo, Linsly

A force to be reckoned with, Giovengo powered through with a .521 batting average and 37 hits for the Cadets. Also tallying a .732 slugging percentage, he had two home runs, three doubles and three triples and 22 RBI. Giovengo also scored 18 times.

PITCHERS

Nicky Zorne, Steubenville

Steubenville proved once again that its a perennial powerhouse during the 2015-16 season. Advancing to the state semifinals, in Division II, Big Red put fear in a lot of teams around the Ohio Valley. Nicky Zorne was a key component on the mound. With a record of 8-0, he fired 85 strikeouts and had a .66 ERA.

Danny Zdinak, Toronto

Zdinak can add another accomplishment to his resume. Already receiving, first team All-Ohio, first team All-OVAC and first team Eastern District, Zdinak fired a team-high 51 strikeouts along with a 1.3 ERA with a 6-3 record. He was also the lead-off batter for the Red Knights with a team high batting average (.461). He powered through with 35 hits including 28 singles, six doubles, on triple and 12 RBI. He was brought home 27 times and had 20 stolen bases.

Cody Goletz, St. Clairsville

Another successful season was put in the books for the Red Devils and Goletz secured a perfect record of 5-0 with one save on the mound. Goletz had a team-high 51 strikeouts while putting in a 1.01 ERA. The senior had some solid stuff at the plate too. Compiling 29 hits, he also brought home a team-high 26 runs.

Johne Stocklask, Bishop Donahue

The Bishops had yet another successful season after last year’s state qualifying squad and leading the way this year for the team was Johne Stocklask. With a batting average of .437 and an on-base-percentage of .504, Stocklask had 27 RBI. He was reliable on the mound too as he posted a 6-1 record with a 1.64 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 44 innings of work.

CATCHERS

Chad Harper, Brooke

Harper put a wrap on his final prep season after an impressive outing behind the plate. Leading the Bruins with a batting average of .452, Harper canned 38 hits including nine doubles and was brought home 25 times. Harper was also first team all-state in Class AAA at the catcher position.
