Martins Ferry Swimmer Tara Fogle Lauded as Academic All-American

Swimmer named Academic All-American

MARTINS FERRY — Tara Fogle is the model student-athlete.

And that’s not just some kind of coach or teacher speak. The recent Martins Ferry graduate proved it throughout her academic and athletic careers.

“I was taught by my parents (Jim and Stephanie) at a young age how important it is to study and do your best in school,” Fogle said.

That lesson stuck with her and paid dividends. As she prepares to attend West Virginia University in the fall, Fogle received an additional high school accolade recently when she was named to the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-American team, which was recently announced.

There are three chief requirements for the honor. Those are maintaining a 3.75 grade point average for seven semesters; be a graduating senior and letter as a senior in swimming.

“My coach (Nick Levi) talked to me about the honor and told me that he had received it during high school and then to hear I had been chosen was very exciting,” Fogle said. “It means my hardwork in and out of the pool had paid off.”

At WVU, Fogle, who carried a 4.404 grade point average, will study exercise physiology with the hopes of one day entering physical therapy school.

The biggest adjustment for Fogle when she moves to Morgantown won’t necessarily be moving away or the classwork, but beginning life without swimming for the first time in 11 years.

“I will miss being a part of a team, the swim family I have built over the years, competing at big meets and swimming with my relays,” Fogle said.

Fogle’s certainly left a lasting impact on the Riders’ program during her four seasons.

She was a three-time all-district selection and eight-time district placer. She was a 16-time OVAC placer and a key cog on the Riders’ conference championship team in 2015. She’s part of the school-record team in the 200 medley relay.

“I will look back at (high school swimming) with pride, not only because of how well I did, but because I had a blast doing it,” Fogle said.

Academically, Fogle was very active at her alma mater. She was second vice president of National Honor Society, member of Chy Phy, Drug Free Club. She was also active in the community as a volunteer at Wheeling Hospital, elementary volunteer and office aid. She’s also member of the iBELIEVE Foundation and the Ohio Association of Student Councils.
