Mountain State Selects Coaches for OVAC Classic

Wheeling?Park’s Daugherty to lead W.Va. all stars July 23

WHEELING —  Chemistry isn’t only big for players, but also for coaching staffs.

Wheeling Park’s staff has been together for “basically the whole ride,” according to head coach Chris Daugherty. And the ride has added an extra turn since the Patriots staff will guide West Virginia in the 71st annual Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Game, which is slated for Saturday, July 23 at Wheeling Island Stadium.

“We’re a very, very close group,” Daugherty said. “I think one of the neat things about (coaching) the OVAC game is you get to be with your entire staff and coach this group of kids. Like in the North-South Game, you represent your staff, but having everyone together makes it nice.”

On top of spending an extra week together, Daugherty said his entire staff is excited for the opportunity that the OVAC Game presents.

“Most of the guys on our staff grew up in the Ohio Valley, so they know what this game means to the kids and football fans of the area,” Daugherty said.

Here’s a capsule look at the West Virginia coaching staff:

Chris Daugherty, Head Coach — The Patriots leader has been at the helm of his alma mater’s program for the last seven seasons and tasted a lot of success.

Daugherty, who has 23 total years of experience, has qualified for five consecutive West Virginia AAA playoff appearances and climbed to the top of the mountain with a state championship last season. The Patriots have gone 46-14 the last five years.

During his tenure, Daugherty has coached 25 all-state players, including having 14 named to the first-team unit.

Before taking over the football program, Daugherty coached track. He won 10 consecutive OVAC titles and the 2007 state championship.
