MOUNDSVILLE — Moundsville came out swinging during their first game of the Edgar Martin Beast of the East Baseball Classic, as Post 3 piled up 13 hits and scored 10 runs in the first four innings as it defeated Ontario in an 11-10 slugfest.

“We hit the ball well. I’m proud of them for that, but you can’t make seven errors in a ballgame,” Moundsville coach Dave Yeater said. “We got lucky and won with seven errors because we hit the ball well.”

Pitcher John Sanitimarino came on in relief in the sixth inning to finish the job for Post 3. In the seventh inning, the intensity grew as Desean Lawerence led off with a single. He was able to steal second safely to get in scoring position.

Sanitimarino tried to pick him off, but the throw was off the mark and went into the outfield, allowing Lawrence to go to third. With no outs and the tying run 90 feet away, Sanitimarino’s error was all the motivation he needed as he struck out the next two batters.

After a walk, and with runners on first and third, he fired his third strikeout of the inning to give his team the victory.

“I was just thinking about winning the game,” Sanitimarino said. “Just throwing the ball over the plate.”

From the first inning, Post 3 knew that it was going to be a good evening at the plate.

Moundsville accounted for three runs on four hits before stepping on to the field to play defense. Ontario trumped Moundsville’s impressive inning with four runs on five hits to take the early lead.

After tying the game in the second inning, Moundsville accounted for four more runs in the third. Bailey Black belted a two-run double followed by an Anthony Gentile hit. Sanitimarino brought both of them home on a two-run single.

Once again, Ontario answered right back. Ben Tejeda started it off with a single while Jordan Markle brought him in with an RBI hit. Aaron Dudanth added his own RBI single to put the score at 8-7.

Kyle Espenelli gave the Cardinals a 9-8 lead with a two-run double.

“It was a good game,” Cardinals manager Carlton James said. “It looked like in the first inning it was going to be a slugfest. We made some crucial errors at different times with two outs. That was the difference. We lost by one, but it was good hitting. The pitching was not there on either side. A couple of crucial errors and that was the game.”

Post 3 took the lead for good as it scored two more in the fourth inning. Black tallied another two-run double. He also brought in the final run for Moundsville on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Yeater noted there is no doubt that this was the best hitting performance by the team this year.

“By far,” he said. “We are talking about three times better than we hit the ball all year. Bailey had a big night at the plate. (Sanitimarino) had some nice hits and had a heck of a sixth and seventh (inning) pitching.”

Black finished with two doubles, a single and five RBIs while Gentile tallied a double, two singles and one RBI. Sanitimarino secured two singles and brought home four runs, while Chris Barry had two singles.

For Ontario, Kyle Gould belted two singles and a double while Espenelli accounted for two doubles and three RBI.

Mid-Atlantic 15, Cadiz 4

CADIZ — Mid-Atlantic put together both good-hitting and pitching as it defeated Cadiz in the Edgar Martin Beast of the East Baseball Classic. The Bayhawks tallied 22 hits and scored 11 runs in the final two innings of play. Zack DeCarlo had a two-run homer that gave the Bayhawks the lead they would not relinquish.

For Cadiz, Tyler Redish belted a double that erased a no-hitter in the fourth while Logan Starr had an RBI single.

St. Clairsville 8

Pittsburgh Game

Changers 7

MOUNDSVILLE — After winning in its first game, St. Clairsville rallied past Pittsburgh that was stopped after five inning due to the two-hour time limit. With the bases loaded, Zach Clark put one up the middle for the game-winner. Bailey McGrath had a double in the final inning for St. Clairsville.
