Silver Knights Will Be Young

SISTERSVILLE–The 2018 softball season will be a learning process for a young Tyler Consolidated softball team.

After losing three seniors to graduation, the Silver Knights have no seniors and three juniors.

“I just keep telling them to keep getting better and not to get down on themselves,” Tyler coach Sam Livingston said. “Those are our goals this year but a winning record would be fantastic.”

Last year ended with a loss in the sectional title where Vanessa Templeton, Madison West and Kylie Martin all played their last game in a Silver Knights uniform.

Templeton and West were both named first team all-state, while Martin earned an All-Valley honorable mention.

Templeton compiled a .567 batting average with 51 hits, 28 RBI and led the valley with 21 doubles. She also crushed a home run. In the circle, she supplied a 10-6 record with a 1.25 ERA. She was a nightmare for opposing hitters as she fanned 162 batters.

West led the Ohio Valley with 52 hits. She also garnered 36 runs, 19 RBI, 13 doubles, a pair of triples and belted a homer. She went 9-2 in the circle with a 2.09 ERA and 57 punchouts.

“Templeton, West and Martin were our top three hitters,” Livingston said. “Those are huge shoes to fill. We are a young team with no seniors and just one returning junior starter.”

That junior starter is catcher, pitcher and shortstop JoLee Walton, who batted .341 last year and swatted 29 hits.

“JoLee Walton was our catcher last year,” Livingston said. “We are going to need her in the field and (in the circle) this year, though. She batted very well last year, too.”

Sophomore Madison DeVaughn was brilliant as a freshman as she collected an All-Valley honorable mention after clubbing a .365 average and 33 hits.

She will see time in the outfield and in the circle.

“I think a couple of these girls will take over and run with it,” Livingston said. “I think they have level heads and will take on the leadership roles.”

The junior class is rounded up by Taylor Ebert (P,OF) and Brianna Wade (3B,2B,P).

The sophomore class includes Summer Miller (C,3B), Ali Miller (1B), Hannah Jackson (2B,OF), Shiann Jones (SS,OF), Breauna Anderson (OF) and Lexie Helmick (OF,2B).

The four freshmen on the Silver Knights’ roster are Maddie Ice (C,3B), Sadi Nichols (OF,2B), Haile Placer (OF) and Regan Smith (2B,OF,1B).

Livingston is assisted by Stan Dennis.
