Ladies Fare Well at State Swim Meet
MORGANTOWN – Wheeling Park’s Katlyn Curnes led a contingent of area girls who will be swimming for state titles today, placing second in the 100-yard backstroke in qualifying heats Thursday at the West Virginia University Natatorium.
Curnes reached the wall in 1:08.64, right behind George Washington’s Emily Hageboeck, who had a 1:07.33. John Marshall’s Jade Worrels will also be in the finals, finishing third with a 1:09.61.
Curnes also placed fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.37 and Worrels was fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.50.
The top six finishers in each event will race in the championship heats today.
Jessie Wayne of Brooke qualified for two events placing sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:08.19) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:37.21), and Emilee Heilman of Park qualified sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.09).
The Wheeling Park team of Heilman, Hannah Butts, Cristin Dolan and Curnes placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:0127) and Curnes, Heilman, Butts and Katherine Stamper were fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.53.
Area swimmers not qualifying for finals but making it to the state tournament included Stamper, who was eighth in the 50 freestyle, Brooke’s Emiley Czesztyicki was ninth in the 100 butterfly and Heilman, who was 10th in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Park girls’ 200 freestyle relay team placed ninth.
No boys individuals or relay teams qualified for the championship heats but the area was well represented in the pool.
Wheeling Park’s Noah Salvatore just missed qualifying for the championship heat in the 200 freestyle, when he touched the wall just .52 behind Matthew Lowther of Bridgeport who was timed at 1.54.22.
Salvatore was also eighth in the 500 freestyle.
Aaron Mull of John Marshall was ninth in the 100 breaststroke, Trent Connor of Wheeling Park was 11th in the 200 individual medley and Zach Sherman of Park was 12th in the 50 butterfly.
Wheeling Park’s 400 freestyle relay team was eighth and the 200 freestyle relay team was 11th.
Swimmers placing 7-12 will race in today’s consolation heat.
